ENGLISH AT RUTHVEN P.S.

Our English program aims to develop in students, the ability to speak, listen, read, and write effectively with confidence, purpose and enjoyment.  This involves developing their oral language; teaching reading and writing skills and strategies; fostering critical perspectives on texts; and introducing students to literature and teaching them how to relate it to their own experience.

Reading entails active engagement with texts and the development of knowledge about the relationship between them and the contexts in which they are created. It also involves the development of knowledge about a range of strategies for reading.

Writing involves using appropriate language for particular purposes or occasions, both formal and informal, to express and represent ideas, issues, arguments, events, experience, character, emotion and information and to reflect on such ideas.

Speaking & Listening refers to the various formal and informal ways oral language is used to convey and receive meaning. It involves the development and demonstration of knowledge about the appropriate oral language for particular audiences and occasions, including body language and voice. It also involves the development of active-listening strategies and an understanding of the conventions of different spoken texts including everyday communication, group discussion, formal presentations and speeches, storytelling and negotiating.

All student’s individual abilities are monitored using formal measurements including Online Interview Testing, formal tests, running records etc, and learning opportunities are provided that cater for the identified needs of each student

English study for the Preps - 4 students will be not less than 10 hours per week, consisting of 5 x 2 hour uninterrupted literacy blocks time-tabled for the first 2 hours of each school day.

This early stage of schooling is marked by the child’s gradual movement from dependence on the teacher and other competent language users to increasing independence as a learner.
