Focus Statement:
The aim of the Ruthven Primary School Library Program is to develop students who are enthusiastic about the library and confident in the use of the resources it offers.
PURPOSE
The Ruthven Primary School Library Program aims to involve all children in the active exploration of the library's resources and systems to enhance reading, research and information retrieval skills.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Library sessions will be of one hour's duration for each grade level per week. Library lessons will be planned with specific learning objectives and preparatory and follow-up work and will encompass the following areas:

- To assist the children to establish an identity as library users and readers.
- To promote the wide range of fiction and non-fiction material in the library.
- To familiarise the children with different authors and illustrators.
- To assist the children to become familiar with library layout and systems.
- To develop research and information retrieval skills in the upper grades and encourage the transfer of these skills to their classroom work.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

- alphabet skills
- identification and location of materials
- promotion of picture-fiction, fiction and non-fiction books
- parts of books
- book discussions
- selection of material
- borrowing system
- viewing and listening skills
- use of computer cataloguing/enquiry system
- note-taking and research
- author/book/illustrator studies
- use of PC-Internet/Encarta/Living Books
