Focus Statement:
This program will aim to provide a second language as part of an integrated curriculum promoting the development of a LOTE, and an appreciation of another culture.
PURPOSE:
The aim of the Italian program is to provide all participating students with the opportunity to gain proficiency in a language other than English.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
There will be an emphasis on the use of language in everyday situations- greetings, asking questions, giving directions, sharing interests, likes and dislikes and feelings and describing objects etc.
As students become familiar with the spoken and written forms of the language they will participate in simple sentence structures based on the models learned. Stories, poetry, songs, computer and videos will be used to reinforce language models and expose students to the Italian culture.

- To increase students' respect and sensitivity towards people of different cultural backgrounds
- To develop students' confidence in using basic oral language in every day situations
- To enhance listening skills and sound discrimination as part of oral language development.
- To develop simple writing skills when students are familiar with spoken and written forms
- To develop awareness of grammatical structures relevant to the Italian language.
- To provide students with the opportunity to use LOTE computer programs.
- To provide an enjoyable introduction to the learning of a Language Other Than English.
